I am attempting to control a 12v rgb led strip (smd 5050) from an arduino uno (and nano), and have set up the following regarding the wiring of the ground, do you mean i should rewire as in my updated diagram? Led strips are a diyer's dream come true. The strips are symmetric so it doesn't matter which end you use.

These leds have an ic built right into the led. The datasheet of 5050 leds says forward current is 60ma at 3.6vdc. 1 x arduino uno (any compatible board will do). These strips come with connectors at each end.
